Choose a home and lot, then build block by block with soil, stone, plants, and lights. Design on a realistic photographic blank canvas with just a house and bare land. Add every yard feature yourself, switch views, and compare a transparent U.S. planning budget.
Only a house and empty land — nothing prebuiltLawncraft: browser yard design simulator
Design a realistic front yard block by block in a photographic 2D studio. Use plants, stone, paths, and lighting; switch to a top-down plan and compare transparent US planning ranges before getting local quotes.
How to play
- Choose a home style and lot, then press Start designing to open the bare property.
- Choose a material, set its finish, shape and size, then click or tap the land to place it. Use Move items to select or drag an existing placement.
- Compare Street, Top plan, border detail and Dusk views. Read the quantities and planning budget, then download the current view as a concept PNG.
Playing guide
Start with a bare property
Lawncraft is a free browser yard-design simulator with a photographic 2D editor. Choose a home and lot, then press Start designing to add your own lawn, paths, plants and lights around the house. All catalog items are available immediately. Tier badges describe the catalog, not an unlock requirement. There is no countdown. Check the property boundary, and switch to Top plan before building near the house.
Try a lawn, path, planting and light
For a first concept, choose Kentucky bluegrass sod from Ground & soil and place a Standard square on clear front-yard land. Add another beside it. Switch to Stone & paths, choose Concrete pavers and lay a separate access strip. Add Boxwood from Plants beside the strip, then a Low-voltage path light from Lighting near its edge. Plants and lights can overlap paving. Compare Street and Dusk, move anything that hides the path, and try a different finish in the Selection inspector. This exercise does not establish climate suitability.
Match the block size to the space
The Build tool controls the next placement: choose Finish / color, Shape & size and Angle before clicking the land. Presets cover squares, rectangles, strips, Circle, Triangle and Diamond. Custom shape & dimensions lets you set Width and Depth separately, from ¼ to four standard blocks. Placement offers Fine grid, Small grid, Standard grid or Free placement. Unrotated rectangular grass blocks can snap against nearby grass, house and lot edges; Free placement lets you position a light or plant precisely. Block grid only shows or hides the guide lines; hiding it does not turn snapping off.
Move an item instead of adding another layer
A chosen catalog material stays active after placement. Clicking an existing item in build mode adds a new independent layer, even when it is the same material in the same spot. To edit instead, press Move items, then select or drag the placed item. The Selection inspector changes its finish, shape, dimensions and angle, or removes it. Rotate turns it by 45 degrees. Moving or recoloring keeps its quantity and estimate; resizing a surface changes them. Undo and Redo cover up to 40 recent edits in the open session. Clear lawn removes the placements and can be undone while that history remains.
Inspect the whole yard and the backyard
Street shows the front yard; Left detail and Right detail crop closer to the borders. Dusk previews the lights. Top plan is a schematic coordinate view, with the backyard above the house; Backyard opens that same view. Drag empty land to pan, or turn on Pan camera to drag anywhere. Use the plus and minus controls to zoom and Reset view to recover the framing. Full screen expands the scene; Escape exits. Use Top plan when the house photograph hides the land you want to edit.
Read quantities before comparing the budget
See item quantities & cost basis groups the placed modules by material. At Standard square size, one Kentucky bluegrass sod module counts as 120 sq ft; Small square counts as 30 sq ft. Two overlapping Standard squares still count as 240 sq ft, so remove accidental duplicates. Surface area affects paving and soil quantities, the longest block dimension affects edging, and each tree or light remains one item per placement. The USD planning ranges are illustrative, not contractor quotes. Local-market factor adjusts the estimate; Optional site conditions add allowances to the installed range. Learning score rewards ground, access, plant variety, lights and category variety. It does not test drainage, access safety, climate suitability or measured coverage.
Keep the local design and export a concept
When browser storage is available, Lawncraft automatically saves the current home, lot and placements on this browser and resumes the editor after a reload. Undo history, camera settings, the local-market factor and optional site-condition choices are not restored. Download concept PNG captures the current view with the learning score, installed planning range and an illustrative-design caption. Set the view and budget first. The PNG is a picture, not an editable backup, survey or construction plan. Change home or lot returns to the property picker; pressing Start designing there replaces the current design and its history. Download a concept first if you want to keep a picture of it.
Common questions
- Why will Lawncraft not place or resize a block?
- Read the notice beneath the editing controls. The entire rotated block must fit inside the property boundary and stay clear of the house footprint. A block may touch an edge without covering the house. Try a smaller size, another angle or a position farther from the edge. Free placement removes snapping, but keeps these boundary checks. The concept also has a limit of 180 editable placements.
- Why does clicking my plant add another item?
- A catalog item is still selected, so the editor is in build mode. Press Move items before selecting or dragging an installed item. Each extra click creates another placement and adds its quantity to the estimate; Undo removes the last addition.
- Does resizing a block change its budget?
- Yes for surfaces and edging. A Standard square of Kentucky bluegrass sod counts as 120 sq ft; a Small square counts as 30 sq ft. A wider rectangular edge uses more linear feet. Trees, plants, lights and other items priced per each still count as one item per placement. Changing only the finish or position keeps the quantity.
- Can I edit Lawncraft with the keyboard?
- Yes. Use Tab to focus controls. With the property view focused, arrow keys move the block cursor and Enter or Space places the chosen material. Focus an installed item and press Enter or Space to select it; arrow keys move it. Shift with arrow keys pans the camera, plus and minus zoom, and Home resets the view. When Pan camera is active, ordinary arrows pan instead of editing.
- Why can I not edit while Pan camera is active?
- Pan camera makes scene gestures navigate the view. Turn it off to place or move items, or choose a catalog material to return to building. Reset view helps if panning or zooming has moved the part of the yard you need out of sight.
- Does a higher learning score unlock plants or prove the design is safe?
- No. Every catalog choice is already available. Level 1–5 and the score out of 100 give feedback on the kinds and number of modules you added. They do not check real planting conditions, utility locations, drainage or construction requirements. Review the actual arrangement as well as the score.
- Will my design follow me to another device?
- No. The save belongs to this browser on this device, with no account or cloud sync. Clearing site data removes it, and restricted or full browser storage may prevent saving. The PNG download preserves a view but cannot be imported as an editable project.
- What should I try if Download concept PNG fails?
- Wait for the property artwork to load, then try Download concept PNG again. The export needs all of this view’s Lawncraft images and browser support for creating a PNG. A missing image blocks the download. Avoid clearing browser data while recovering your design.
